An international NGO aiming to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza reported on Sunday that it is in discussions with Malta’s government. The negotiations focus on allowing their vessel, named “Conscience,” to enter Maltese waters for crucial repairs following damage inflicted by a drone attack.

The ship, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, sustained significant damage to its front, including a loss of power, when it was struck by two drones just outside Maltese territorial waters early on Friday. The NGO has accused Israel of being responsible for the incident, although Israel has not commented on the matter.

“This ship was slated to embark with around 30 peace activists from various countries to deliver vital food and medicines to Gaza, where conditions remain dire due to ongoing conflicts,” coalition officials stated.

Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that Malta is willing to assist the ship with repairs after verifying that its cargo consists solely of humanitarian aid. Initially, the coalition accused Malta of hindering access to the vessel, a claim the Maltese government denied, stating that the crew had previously declined inspection assistance.

The coalition later confirmed that a surveyor could board the ship as part of the discussions with Malta, indicating a willingness to cooperate to ensure that the mission to Gaza proceeds safely.

The incident highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has deteriorated due to continued military hostilities. In prior attempts, ships like the “Conscience” have faced serious repercussions, including one incident in 2010 where Israeli troops intervened, resulting in the deaths of nine activists. This context underscores the perils faced by organizations working to provide relief in conflict zones.

Despite the challenges, the efforts of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition and the negotiations with Malta demonstrate a commitment to humanitarian aid, which remains a vital necessity for the beleaguered population of Gaza.

This situation emphasizes the urgency for a peaceful resolution and sustained international engagement to address the suffering in Gaza, ensuring that relief can reach those in dire need.
