Malta is set to welcome the 8th Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in late 2027, with over 1,150 young athletes aged 14-18 from 74 countries and territories anticipated to participate across the scenic islands of Malta and Gozo. This edition of the Games will include competitions in eight sports: Athletics & Para Athletics, Netball, Squash, Swimming & Para Swimming, Triathlon, Weightlifting, and, for the first time, Sailing and Water Polo. The event will also feature the largest Para programme in CYG history, including Para Swimming, highlighting a commitment to inclusivity.

Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, emphasized the importance of the Games, stating, “The Commonwealth Youth Games are more than a captivating celebration of sport; they are a transformative experience for young athletes.” He noted that these young competitors are not just athletes; they are change-makers poised to influence the future of their communities and the broader Commonwealth movement.

Fiji’s participation in CYG has a rich history, with the nation having secured 14 medals, including three golds primarily in events such as Swimming and Weightlifting. Following their performance at the TRINBAGO 2023 CYG, where they brought home a silver and two bronze medals, the upcoming Malta 2027 Games present an opportunity for Fiji’s youth to leverage their experiences from the recent 2025 Pacific Mini Games.

The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) is gearing up for this significant event by calling for Expressions of Interest to appoint a Chef de Mission, engaging national federations to ensure Fiji is well represented in Malta. This approach aims to build on the underlined legacy of youth-focused competitions leading up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, fostering future sporting talents.

The CYG in Malta promises to be a pivotal event for nurturing young athletes from Fiji and beyond, reinforcing the notion that sport can pave the way for personal and collective growth while promoting unity and competitive spirit among diverse nations. As anticipation builds, the upcoming Games serve as a beacon of hope and encouragement for the next generation of athletes.
