A wildfire, known as the Franklin Fire, erupted on Tuesday just northwest of Los Angeles, prompting evacuations in Malibu as it posed a threat to residential areas, disrupted power, and led to road closures within the coastal community. The fire rapidly expanded overnight from five acres to 2,713 acres (approximately 1,097 hectares) due to strong winds, spreading southward over the Pacific Coast Highway.
According to Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone during a press briefing, the fire remains completely uncontained as of now. Although a small number of homes have been lost, thankfully there have been no reported injuries or fatalities. Marrone emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that a coordinated response involving both ground and air support is crucial, with an additional 300 firefighters joining the existing 700 already on site.
As of this report, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Sheriff Robert Luna indicated that evacuation orders affect 2,043 structures, with another 6,046 under evacuation warnings. Among those evacuating is actor Dick Van Dyke, who shared on social media his concerns for the community while he, his wife, and their pets relocated to safety.
Local resident Fred Roberts described the intense winds in Malibu Canyon, likening them to “a blowtorch,” underscoring the severity of the situation. In response to the emergency, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California has secured a grant from FEMA to help manage the fire’s suppression efforts.
As the situation continues to develop, the National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning due to elevated fire danger stemming from Santa Ana wind gusts that could reach up to 65 miles per hour, further complicating firefighting efforts. Although the warning remains effective until Wednesday, forecasts suggest that winds might begin to lessen.
Meanwhile, Pepperdine University has lifted its shelter-in-place protocol after ensuring the safety of students and staff. President Jim Gash noted that the university’s campus has been designed with fire safety in mind and has so far sustained minimal damage.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unrelenting threat posed by wildfires in California, but it also highlights the resilience and proactive measures taken by local communities and institutions. The response efforts being mobilized reflect a commitment to protecting both lives and property amidst such challenges.
Stay informed and safe during these critical times, and let us all remain hopeful for the safety of those affected and for effective control over the wildfire soon.
