A wildfire, propelled by strong winds, has erupted near Los Angeles, prompting evacuations in Malibu as it threatens homes and disrupts power and transportation. Dubbed the Franklin Fire, the blaze expanded dramatically from five acres (two hectares) to approximately 2,713 acres (1,097 hectares) overnight, intensifying concerns in the scenic coastal region, which has about 10,000 residents.
Currently, the fire remains completely uncontained, having caused damage to some homes but fortunately resulting in no injuries or fatalities, according to Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone. “We are going to have a coordinated ground and air assault,” he stated, mentioning that an additional 300 firefighters will join the existing 700 working to combat the fire.
As of now, the cause of the fire is still unknown. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna reported that more than 2,000 structures have mandatory evacuation orders, with an additional 6,000 under evacuation warnings. Among those who had to evacuate is the well-known actor Dick Van Dyke, who expressed hope for the community’s recovery through a social media post.
Local residents like Fred Roberts have noted the severity of the situation, comparing the winds in Malibu Canyon to a “blowtorch.” The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the area due to increased fire risk, with wind gusts expected to reach 65 miles per hour (104 km/h). Thankfully, while the warning remains in effect through Wednesday, lighter winds are anticipated, offering a glimmer of hope for firefighters.
On a positive note, Pepperdine University lifted its shelter-in-place order, allowing students to return to their residences after having taken refuge in safe areas on campus. University President Jim Gash reassured that the campus had sustained minimal damage and no injuries among the community members.
In summary, while the Franklin Fire continues to pose threats to Malibu, community resilience and proactive measures by authorities highlight collective efforts to protect lives and property. The support from state officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom securing federal assistance, echoes the hopeful determination to overcome this challenging crisis.
