Maleli Nauvasi, a rising star in rugby, has been selected to participate in the Fijian Drua development program. His impressive performance in the Vodafone Deans competition, where he played a pivotal role in helping Queen Victoria School secure the under-18 title this year, garnered the attention of Drua selectors.
Nauvasi’s notable contribution in the final against Nasinu Secondary School earned him the Player of the Match honor. His talents were further displayed while representing the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team, where he achieved two victories against the Australia Schoolboys U18.
Demonstrating his versatility, Nauvasi has played multiple positions, including flyhalf, wing, and fullback during his tenure at Queen Victoria School. He expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Drua Development program and conveyed his gratitude for this opportunity.
Ifereimi Rawaqa, the development and skills coach for Fijian Drua, commended Nauvasi for his innate talent and discipline, expressing confidence in his ability to thrive in a professional setting. Rawaqa remarked on Nauvasi’s impressive performances, noting that they are eager to support his continued growth in rugby.
Baden Stephenson, general manager of Fijian Drua, highlighted the importance of Nauvasi’s signing, especially considering the interest he had received from international clubs. Nauvasi’s choice to remain with the Drua showcases his commitment to the club and his aspirations to advance from the U18 level to the Flying Fijians.
He joins a cohort of ten other promising young athletes in the Drua development squad. This development program includes a salary, training with the Super Rugby Pacific squad, and participation in provincial competitions such as the Skipper Cup and Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.
The initiative aims to provide these young players with the essential resources, coaching, and environment needed to transition into professional rugby and achieve significant success in the future.
