Jese Dautei Robinson has made a significant mark in the field of nursing by becoming the first male nurse to graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery among twelve other nurses in Labasa. At the graduation ceremony held at the Civic Centre in Labasa, he was honored with three prestigious awards for his outstanding academic achievements, which included accolades for Academic Excellence in Normal Puerperium and Newborn, Normal Labour and Birth, and Overall Academic Excellence in the program.
At 32 years old, Robinson hails from Vunikodi Village, Udu, Macuata, and currently works as a nurse at Nasea Health Centre. His journey into the nursing profession was shaped by personal tragedy; his father, Veveni Robinson, passed away when he was in Year 11, inspiring him to dedicate his life to helping others through nursing. As the second eldest of eight siblings, he took on the responsibility of providing for his family and community, which fueled his commitment to education and healthcare.
Robinson’s decision to specialize in midwifery is deeply personal. He expressed a heartfelt desire to become a good father, stating, “I chose to become a midwife, even though I am a male nurse, because I want to be a good father.” His wife, who is also a nurse at Labasa Hospital, shares his dedication to providing top-notch care to patients.
Driven by the profound joys of childbirth, Robinson upgraded his qualifications to support mothers during delivery. He remarked, “To help bring a life into this world and place it in a mother’s arms is the purest joy.” His commitment to the nursing profession extends to advocating for its inclusivity, noting that “Nursing is a beautiful profession where there is no boundary set between genders.” He encourages others to consider a career in nursing, highlighting the field’s welcoming nature.
Robinson’s accomplishments and his passion for midwifery not only break barriers in the profession but also inspire others to realize their potential, demonstrating that compassion and skill know no gender.
This story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of pursuing one’s dreams, regardless of societal norms. Robinson’s journey reflects the idea that meaningful change often begins with individuals who dare to break stereotypes. His achievements will undoubtedly encourage more people, especially men, to consider nursing and midwifery as viable career paths.
