Jese Dautei Robinson has etched his name in history as the only male nurse to earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery from a cohort of 12 nurses in Labasa. At the recent graduation ceremony held at the Civic Centre, he was honored with three prestigious awards recognizing his academic excellence.
At 32 years old and hailing from Vunikodi Village in Udu, Macuata, Mr. Robinson excelled in categories such as Academic Excellence in Normal Puerperium and Newborn, and Academic Excellence in Normal Labour and Birth, along with Overall Academic Excellence in the midwifery program.
Currently working at Nasea Health Centre, his journey into nursing was fueled by a personal tragedy—the loss of his father, Veveni Robinson, during his Year 11 studies. This event motivated him to pursue a career in nursing, where he felt a calling to support both his family and community as the second eldest among eight siblings.
Choosing midwifery was a deeply personal decision for Mr. Robinson, who stated, “I chose to become a midwife, even though I am a male nurse, because I want to become a good father.” His dedication to the field is echoed by his wife, a nurse at Labasa Hospital, who shares his commitment to compassionate care.
Mr. Robinson is driven by his ambition to aid mothers in having safe deliveries, expressing that, “To help bring a life into this world and place it in a mother’s arms is the purest joy.” He also advocates for the nursing profession, stressing its inclusive nature. “Nursing is a beautiful profession where there is no boundary set between genders. I encourage people to pursue a career in this field,” he urged.
Through his significant achievements and passion for midwifery, Jese Robinson is not only breaking gender barriers but also inspiring others to chase their dreams, demonstrating that compassion and expertise know no gender limitations.
In conclusion, Mr. Robinson’s story serves as an inspiring testament to the evolving nature of the nursing profession and the importance of inclusivity. His achievements highlight the transformative power of education and personal motivation to effect change within communities.
