Villagers in Malabi, located in the Wailevu district of Tailevu, now enjoy safer and more reliable access to their community with the recent commissioning of the Malabi Community Access Road. The opening ceremony took place yesterday and was officiated by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi R. Ditoka.
This new road is expected to significantly enhance daily travel for the residents, particularly benefiting women and children. Previously, villagers had to disembark along Kings Road and then walk for at least 10 minutes inland to reach their homes, a situation that made access challenging and time-consuming.
Minister Ditoka highlighted that the project underscores the government’s commitment to providing practical rural infrastructure aimed at improving the lives of the people. He emphasized that the new road enhances safety and accessibility for the villagers of Malabi, who often face difficulties when access is restricted.
Village elder Vani Keteivalu expressed that the road responds to a long-standing necessity and will substantially transform the daily experiences of women by facilitating safer and easier travel. In addition, village headman Sakeasi Kakaivalu remarked on the benefits this development brings to the entire community, reinforcing access, supporting local livelihoods, and enhancing safety, especially during adverse weather conditions.
The project, which cost $44,000, was funded through the Ministry’s Community Access Roads, Footpaths, and Footbridges Programme. It is poised to benefit over 250 villagers from more than 35 households, while also paving the way for future community growth and better access to essential services. The completion of this road marks a hopeful step toward enhancing the quality of life in Malabi and reflects a broader vision of rural development.
