Police have apprehended a man believed to be a significant figure in the nation’s drug trade. Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime, Mesake Waqa, confirmed that the arrest was made by the Fiji Police Force’s Serious Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) in collaboration with officers from the Western Division.
The 29-year-old suspect was under investigation for involvement in drug distribution. A coordinated raid at a residence in Lautoka led to the recovery of white crystals, white powder, and dried green leaves, which tested positive for methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana, respectively. Additionally, authorities seized smoking devices, a digital scale, a packing machine, and various local and foreign currencies presumed to be proceeds from illegal activities.
Alongside the 29-year-old, two other men and a 20-year-old woman were also detained. During the operation, the suspect allegedly attempted to escape by releasing his dog but was pursued and subsequently arrested by the officers.
In a separate incident, three men and two women were taken into custody following a raid in Namaqumaqua, Serua, where a combination of white liquid and powder, confirmed as methamphetamine, was confiscated.
The SOCU, formerly known as the Counter Narcotics Bureau, plays a crucial role in combating drug-related crimes. Mr. Waqa noted that the unit’s renaming signifies the Fiji Police Force’s comprehensive strategy against illegal drug activities and related organized crimes, such as money laundering and human trafficking.
Mr. Waqa reiterated the commitment of the Fiji Police Force to hold accountable those involved in the illegal drug distribution network. He encouraged public patience, as thorough investigations require time and an evidence-based approach to secure successful prosecutions.
