The Fiji Police Force has announced details surrounding a significant drug bust that took place in Nadi today. Two individuals were arrested in connection with the seizure of drugs believed to be methamphetamine. Reports indicate that these substances were intercepted as part of a cargo shipment, which the two suspects attempted to collect.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Mesake Waqa confirmed the incident, stating, “We will be releasing a joint statement soon.” The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service is currently gathering further information to provide a comprehensive statement regarding the operation.
This recent bust adds to a series of significant drug seizures reported in Nadi this year, including multiple busts involving methamphetamine. Earlier in January, police seized about 3 tonnes of drugs from a vacant home in Legalega, followed by another major operation in Maqalevu with over 1.1 tonnes of various substances. The Fiji Counter Narcotics Strategy revealed that since January 2023, more than 14 kg of methamphetamine, valued at approximately $7.4 million, has been confiscated.
The continue efforts by the Fiji Police underscore the pressing issue of drug trafficking in the region. Addressing the issue requires not only robust law enforcement but also community engagement and support systems for prevention and rehabilitation.
As more details about today’s bust emerge, the Fiji Police’s commitment to tackling the drug problem remains steadfast and represents a hopeful step towards a safer community.
