An officer from the Fiji Counter Narcotics Bureau, along with a civilian, was reportedly arrested during a drug bust at Nadi International Airport. The operation led to the seizure of a package containing five kilograms of what is believed to be methamphetamine, which had arrived in the country through cargo. The officer allegedly accompanied the civilian to collect the package, which was intended for him as stated by sources familiar with the case.

This incident unfolded during a controlled operation executed by the police and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) as the duo attempted to clear Customs after retrieving the package. It has been reported that a third individual, purportedly the driver of the vehicle used by the two, was also taken into custody shortly thereafter.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Mesake Waqa confirmed the arrests and indicated that a joint statement from the authorities would be made available soon. The FRCS is currently gathering additional information before disclosing further details.

This arrest follows a trend of significant drug seizures at Nadi International Airport, emphasizing ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking in Fiji. In recent months, there have been notable operations where law enforcement cooperation has led to the apprehension of individuals attempting to smuggle illegal substances into the country.

The continuous collaboration between the Fiji Police Force and the FRCS highlights the importance of joint efforts in tackling drug-related issues, ensuring a safer environment for the community. Maintaining vigilance and conducting thorough checks at border points are critical strategies in the fight against the illicit drug trade, as demonstrated in this recent operation.

In light of the proactive measures being implemented, there is hope for improved drug enforcement strategies in Fiji, marking a significant step towards achieving a drug-free society.
