Major Alcohol Smuggling Bust in Fiji: Over FJ $6,500 Seized!

A coordinated search and inspection operation on a foreign-flagged sailing vessel in Savusavu resulted in the discovery and seizure of undeclared alcohol, with a total duty liability and penalty exceeding FJ $6,500.

This operation was carried out through the collaborative efforts of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) and the Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN). A joint boarding team, which included representatives from FRCS, RFN, the Fiji Dog Detector Unit (FDDU), the Fiji Police Force, the Fiji Immigration Department, the Ministry of Fisheries, the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF), the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOH), conducted the search. They confiscated 234 bottles of 200ml rum, three bottles of 750ml rum, and one bottle of 1-liter liquor.

The seized items were handed over to FRCS officers for detention, and the vessel’s captain was arrested and charged under Section 137 (a) of the Customs Act 1986 for the offense.

FRCS chief executive Udit Singh praised the officers for their successful interception and commitment to their duties in safeguarding the nation’s borders against illegal activities.

“Alcohol is subject to excise duty upon importation to Fiji, and smuggling undermines the country’s revenue that is essential for funding crucial public services such as schools, hospitals, and infrastructure,” Singh stated.

He also reminded operators of foreign vessels to be aware of and comply with Fiji’s entry requirements, emphasizing that FRCS will adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal activities detected at Fijian borders.
