Divers and fishermen in Macuata are urgently calling for a reevaluation of seafood pricing, specifically for sea cucumber and bêche-de-mer, as they feel the current pricing structure leaves them in a precarious financial situation. Their dissatisfaction centers around regulations that mandate divers sell their catch exclusively through Ministry-appointed middlemen instead of allowing direct sales to licensed agents and exporters. This system has been causing significant frustration among local divers.

Malakai Dovibua, a diver from Labasa, emphasizes that this issue has been exacerbated since the ban on sea cucumber was lifted, leading to notably lower earnings for divers. He pointed out the lack of consultation prior to implementing this new process, stating, “We, as divers and villagers, need to be heard. It’s not right for them to make laws and rules from their offices and force us to follow and abide by them.” Dovibua argues that immediate action is necessary, labeling the middleman requirement as both unfair and burdensome.

Fellow diver Jiofiliti Draveisau echoed these sentiments, highlighting the additional complications caused by frequent product rejections, which have made the situation even more dire. “Some of us have travelled from far away, only for our products to be rejected. It is really frustrating and disappointing. We have families to support. The low prices and the middleman system feel like we are robbing us.”

Local divers assert that these regulations are not only diminishing their income but also amplifying the hardships faced by families relying on the fishing industry for their livelihoods. FBC News has reached out to the Ministry of Fisheries for further clarification and is currently awaiting a response, which could potentially address these pressing concerns from the community.

While the situation remains challenging for the divers of Macuata, their continued advocacy may prompt necessary changes that support their financial well-being and allow for fairer fishing practices. This collective call for action demonstrates the resilience and determination of local communities to secure their livelihoods.
