Twelve districts in Macuata have committed to raising $30,000 each in a collective effort to enhance educational opportunities for children in the province. This initiative was celebrated by Tui Labasa Ratu Jone Qomate during a recent meeting of the Macuata Provincial Council, held in Sasa Village on Friday.
If each district fulfills its pledge, the total funding could reach an impressive $360,000 by the financial year 2025. Ratu Jone expressed concerns regarding the recent results of the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE), which revealed that about 6,000 students did not pass. He mentioned that an education committee, consisting of retired teachers, will investigate how many of these students are from Macuata.
Currently, there is no specific data on the number of failed students from the iTaukei community. The funds raised will be directed towards educational programs, including a scholarship scheme to support students in need and those requiring additional educational assistance.
Furthermore, Ratu Jone highlighted the findings of last year’s wellbeing survey conducted by the iTaukei Affairs Board. The survey revealed a significant number of school dropouts, many of whom were unable to provide valid reasons to their parents for leaving school. He stressed the necessity of parental involvement and encouraged traditional leaders to actively engage in discussions with children about the importance of education.
This proactive approach by the districts is a hopeful sign for the future of education in Macuata, as it demonstrates a community-wide commitment to fostering a supportive environment for students. Encouraging parental engagement and targeted programs may lead to improved educational outcomes and a brighter future for the youth in the province.
