Twelve districts in Macuata have committed to collectively raising $30,000 each to enhance educational opportunities for children in the province. This initiative was discussed during a Macuata Provincial Council meeting chaired by Tui Labasa Ratu Jone Qomate in Sasa Village on Friday. If all districts fulfill their pledge, the total funding could reach an impressive $360,000 by the end of the 2025 financial year.

Ratu Jone expressed appreciation for the leaders’ dedication to improving education, especially in light of concerning results from the recent Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE), where around 6,000 students did not pass. He remarked on the formation of an education committee, which includes retired teachers, to examine how many of the failed students are from Macuata.

While the specifics about the number of failed iTaukei students remain unclear, Ratu Jone outlined plans for allocating the raised funds towards educational programs, including the possibility of a scholarship scheme to assist needy students and those requiring additional educational support.

He noted findings from the wellbeing survey conducted by the iTaukei Affairs Board, which indicated a significant rate of school dropouts and highlighted the need for better communication between parents and children regarding the importance of education. Ratu Jone urged traditional leaders to become more actively involved in these discussions.

This initiative represents a proactive step by the community to tackle educational challenges and support local students, reflecting a shared commitment to improving educational outcomes in Macuata. By fostering a culture of support and collaboration, the hope is that these efforts will lead to better academic performance and a brighter future for the children in the province.
