In a significant move to enhance education in Fiji’s Macuata province, twelve districts have committed to raising $30,000 each, aiming for a total of $360,000 by the 2025 financial year. This initiative was endorsed during a meeting of the Macuata Provincial Council, chaired by Tui Labasa Ratu Jone Qomate at Sasa Village.
Ratu Jone commended the traditional leaders for their commitment to improving educational outcomes, especially in light of recent concerning results from the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE), where around 6,000 students did not pass. He stated that an education committee comprised of retired teachers will be established to assess how many of these students are from Macuata, although specific data regarding the performance of iTaukei students is not yet available.
The earmarked funds will support educational programs and potentially kickstart a scholarship scheme aimed at assisting students who require additional support. Ratu Jone also referenced findings from a wellbeing survey conducted by the iTaukei Affairs Board, which pointed to a troubling number of school dropouts, often without clear explanations to their parents.
He underlined the necessity of involving parents in their children’s education and urged traditional leaders to engage more with families about the significance of academic success.
This initiative represents a hopeful step towards addressing educational challenges in the region, showcasing a strong community commitment to the future of children in Macuata. By mobilizing resources and reinforcing the role of education, these leaders are actively working to cultivate a brighter future for their youth. This collaborative effort reflects a profound understanding of education’s pivotal role in community development and individual empowerment.
