Twelve districts in Macuata have committed to raising $30,000 each to enhance educational opportunities for local children. Tui Labasa Ratu Jone Qomate, who led a meeting of the Macuata Provincial Council at Sasa Village on Friday, praised the traditional leaders for their dedication to this cause.
If all districts participate, the total amount raised could reach approximately $360,000 by the 2025 financial year. Ratu Jone expressed concerns regarding recent Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE) results, highlighting that around 6,000 students failed. An education committee, which includes retired teachers, has been formed to assess how many of these students hail from Macuata.
Currently, there is no specific data indicating how many of the failed students are iTaukei. The raised funds will be directed towards educational initiatives, such as a scholarship program for students in need and additional support for those requiring further educational assistance.
Ratu Jone referenced the findings from the iTaukei Affairs Board’s wellbeing survey conducted last year, which indicated a concerning number of school dropouts and students failing to communicate valid reasons for their absence to parents. He stressed the significance of parental involvement and urged traditional leaders to engage more with children about the value of education.
This initiative marks a meaningful step towards transforming educational outcomes in the region and fostering a supportive environment for students. By uniting resources and emphasizing community and parental support, Macuata could witness significant improvements in educational achievement and retention rates.
In summary, this commitment to education reflects a collective effort to address challenges faced in the schooling system and highlights the proactive measures being adopted to support the youth in the province.
