Twelve districts in the Macuata region have committed to raising $30,000 each to enhance education for local children. This decision was made during the Macuata Provincial Council meeting held at Sasa Village, chaired by Tui Labasa Ratu Jone Qomate.
Ratu Jone commended the traditional leaders for their support of this initiative, noting that if all districts contribute, the fundraising goal could total an impressive $360,000 by the 2025 financial year.
The motivation for this initiative stems from concerning results in the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE), where around 6,000 students did not pass. Ratu Jone mentioned that an education committee, composed of experienced retired teachers, will assess how many of these students are from Macuata, although specific data on the number of failed students of iTaukei descent is currently lacking.
Funds raised will be directed towards educational programs, including a scholarship scheme for students who require additional support, ensuring that no child is left behind in their educational journey.
Furthermore, Ratu Jone pointed out findings from a wellbeing survey by the iTaukei Affairs Board, highlighting a troubling rate of school dropouts, with many students unable to articulate valid reasons to their parents for not attending school. He stressed the critical need for parental involvement in discussing the value of education with their children, and he encouraged traditional leaders to play a more proactive role in these discussions.
This initiative reflects a strong community commitment to addressing educational shortcomings and fostering a brighter future for the youth in Macuata.
In summary, through collaboration and community action, there’s potential to significantly improve educational outcomes for children in the Macuata province. The focus on support and involvement from both leaders and parents is a hopeful step toward ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed academically.
