The Fiji Police M-PAiSA task force has arrested two individuals in connection with a mobile money transfer scam. The suspects, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman from Davuilevu and Koronivia, are accused of deceiving a victim through a rental car scam via the M-PAiSA app.
On September 17, the two allegedly utilized multiple Facebook accounts to advertise rental cars, requiring payments to be made through the mobile money platform. A victim from Nadi, after sending $190 to the number provided by the suspects, found himself unable to get in touch with them, realizing he had fallen prey to a scam. Subsequently, he reported the incident to the Nadi Police Station.
Both individuals face charges of Obtaining Financial Advantage By Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are scheduled to appear in court at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
This case highlights the growing concern over online scams, particularly those leveraging mobile payment systems. It serves as a reminder to the public to remain vigilant and conduct thorough checks before making financial commitments online. With the commitment of law enforcement in tackling such fraudulent activities, there is hope that similar scams can be minimized in the future, protecting consumers from deceitful practices.
