The Fiji Police M-PAiSA task force has taken action against two individuals accused of financial deception involving the popular mobile money transfer application.

The suspects, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman residing in Davuilevu and Koronivia respectively, are alleged to have orchestrated a scam by posting fake rental car advertisements on Facebook. On September 17, they misled victims into believing they could rent cars, directing payments through the M-PAiSA app.

One particular victim from Nadi sent $190 to the mobile number provided in the ads. After failing to establish further contact with the offenders, he realized he had been scammed and subsequently reported the incident to the police in Nadi.

Both accused individuals now face serious charges, including obtaining financial advantage by deception and dishonestly dealing with personal financial information. They are scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.

This incident serves as a timely reminder for the public to exercise caution when dealing with online transactions and offers valuable insight into the measures being taken by authorities to combat financial fraud in the digital age. It is hopeful that such actions will discourage scammers and protect consumers in the future.
