The Fiji Police M-PAiSA task force has taken action against two individuals accused of committing financial deception using the mobile money transfer application. The suspects, aged 29 and 37, are from Davuilevu and Koronivia, respectively, and are believed to have engaged in a rental car scam.
On September 17, the duo allegedly exploited multiple Facebook accounts to advertise rental cars, directing potential renters to make payments via the M-PAiSA app. A victim from Nadi fell for the ruse, sending $190 to the mobile number listed. However, upon attempting to contact the alleged scammers afterward, the victim discovered he had been defrauded and promptly reported the incident to the Nadi Police Station.
As a result of the investigation, the two individuals have been charged with one count each of Obtaining Financial Advantage By Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance when using online platforms for financial transactions. It serves as a reminder for individuals to thoroughly investigate and verify the legitimacy of rental offers before proceeding with payments to avoid falling victim to scams. The swift response from the Fiji Police demonstrates their commitment to combating financial fraud and protecting citizens.
In summary, the arrests related to the M-PAiSA scam not only reflect law enforcement’s proactive stance but also serve as a cautionary tale emphasizing the need for public awareness in digital transactions. As communities unite against fraud, there is hope that awareness and preventative measures will only continue to improve.
