The Fiji Police M-PAiSA task force has filed charges against two individuals accused of committing financial fraud using the mobile money transfer platform M-PAiSA. The suspects, who are based in Davuilevu and Koronivia, allegedly conspired to deceive victims through a rental car scam.
According to reports, on September 17, the duo utilized multiple Facebook accounts to promote rental vehicles, instructing interested parties to make payments via the M-PAiSA app. A victim from Nadi fell prey to the scheme, sending $190 to one of the provided mobile numbers. After failing to reach the accused, he realized he had been scammed and promptly reported the incident to the police at the Nadi Police Station.
As a result, the two suspects, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, have been charged with one count each of Obtaining Financial Advantage By Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are slated to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
