Lynda Tabuya, the former Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, will learn her fate within the People’s Alliance (PA) party in the next 21 days following a meeting of the party’s executive committee in Suva. This meeting was convened to formalize her disciplinary hearing, which marks her second review within the party.
In February, Tabuya faced allegations related to a scandal involving a fellow minister, which resulted in her removal as the party’s deputy leader. The PA described the scandal’s allegations as having potentially caused significant damage to its reputation.
Most recently, Tabuya is embroiled in controversy due to an explicit video that was leaked on Christmas Eve, depicting her dancing nude, which she has confirmed is genuine. She claims the video was meant for her ex-husband, Robert Semaan. Following the leak, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed her from her ministerial position on December 26, a decision he participated in virtually during the recent executive committee meeting.
The PA’s general secretary, Sila Balawa, assured that the disciplinary process will adhere to the party’s constitution, allowing a complete and fair review of the circumstances. The committee has a 21-day timeline to provide findings and recommendations, and Tabuya will have the opportunity to present her side of the story during this process.
The specifics regarding the members of the disciplinary committee have not been disclosed, but the prior committee included notable figures within the party.
This unfolding situation presents an opportunity for Tabuya to clarify her position and potentially rebuild her reputation within the PA. The commitment to transparency in the disciplinary process reflects the party’s intention to uphold its integrity amidst challenging circumstances.
As this situation develops, it emphasizes the importance of accountability in political roles and the necessity for parties to address issues affecting their image while providing fair hearing opportunities to all involved.
