The former Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, will learn her fate within the People’s Alliance (PA) party in the next 21 days following a meeting of the party’s executive committee in Suva. This meeting was convened to formalize her disciplinary hearing, marking her second such review within the party.
Earlier this year, Ms. Tabuya faced allegations linked to a scandal involving a fellow minister, which resulted in her removal as deputy leader of the party. In March, the PA described the allegations as having caused “potentially irreparable damage” to its reputation. Most recently, Ms. Tabuya’s situation intensified due to a video leak on Christmas Eve that showed her dancing nude, which she has admitted is real. She stated that the video was meant for her ex-husband, Robert Semaan.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed her from her ministerial position shortly after the video emerged. He participated in the executive committee meeting via virtual link from Savusavu.
The PA’s general secretary, Sila Balawa, confirmed that the disciplinary process will adhere to the party’s constitution. The disciplinary committee has been given 21 days to conclude its investigation, during which Ms. Tabuya will have the chance to present her side of the story. Balawa emphasized the need for an independent process, ensuring the integrity and privacy of the proceedings.
While the names of the current committee members haven’t been disclosed, it is noted that the previous committee included various prominent figures.
This situation highlights the ongoing challenges within political parties to uphold their reputations while also addressing internal conflicts transparently and fairly. It remains hopeful that a resolution can be reached that respects due process and allows all parties to move forward positively.
