Lynda Tabuya has been appointed as the new Minister for Information in a Cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. This appointment marks her return to a prominent governmental role after a period of controversy and speculation regarding her future in politics.
Tabuya takes over the responsibilities directly from the Prime Minister, who has praised her as well-qualified to lead the Ministry of Information, focusing on enhancing public relations and transparency. “Fijians have a right to clear, timely facts, regardless of where they live,” Tabuya stated, emphasizing her goal to make government information accessible and reliable.
She outlined several key initiatives including the implementation of weekly press briefings starting this month, a comprehensive Freedom of Information roadmap, and the establishment of a 24/7 digital newsroom with a user-friendly portal. Additionally, plans for community outreach vans and training programs for ministry spokespeople were discussed, aiming to promote effective communication.
Addressing media freedom, Tabuya expressed her commitment to collaborating with journalists and watchdog groups to review any regulations that may impede free reporting. She reinforced the notion that a free press is essential for government accountability.
In this Cabinet reshuffle, Tomasi Tunabuna was promoted to Minister for Agriculture, succeeding Alitia Bainivalu, alongside the appointment of Inosi Kuridrani as Assistant Minister. The official appointments will be formalized through a swearing-in ceremony soon.
This reshuffle is not just about change in personnel; it symbolizes a strategic move to revitalize the government’s effectiveness in communication and agriculture. Optimistically, it holds the potential for improved governance and response to the needs of the citizens, fostering hope for a more engaged and accountable government in the future.
