The former Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, is set to learn the outcome of her disciplinary hearing within the People’s Alliance (PA) party in the next three weeks. This decision follows a meeting of the party’s executive committee held at their headquarters in Suva.

Tabuya is facing her second disciplinary action as a member of the PA. Earlier this year, she was scrutinized by the committee over allegations related to a sex and drug scandal involving another minister, which resulted in her being removed from the position of deputy leader in February. The party publicly expressed that the allegations had caused “potentially irreparable damage” to its reputation at that time.

The latest incident that has led to her current situation was the leaking of an explicit video on Christmas Eve, which showed her dancing nude. She confirmed the video’s authenticity, stating it was meant for her then-husband, Robert Semaan, from whom she divorced in 2016 according to investigations by FICAC. Following the leak, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed her from her ministerial role on December 26.

During a virtual appearance from Savusavu at the recent executive committee meeting, Prime Minister Rabuka acknowledged the ongoing issues.

The general secretary of the PA, Sila Balawa, elaborated on the independent disciplinary process, ensuring adherence to the party’s constitution. Balawa stated that the committee has 21 days to conclude its findings and emphasized the importance of a fair process that respects the integrity and privacy of all parties involved. Ms. Tabuya will have the opportunity to present her perspective during this investigation.

This situation presents a significant challenge for the People’s Alliance as they navigate internal issues while maintaining their public image. As the party conducts its review, there is hope that they will manage to address these controversies transparently and restore trust among their constituents.

As this unfolds, it will be crucial for the PA to focus on rehabilitating its image and ensuring that party members can move beyond personal challenges to uphold the values and responsibilities expected of public servants.
