A multi-million-dollar hangar construction project at COMO Laucala Island may require a “miracle” to be completed within the next two months, according to sources familiar with the situation. However, once operational, it is expected to boost employment figures for the island.
The Nadi project has faced a history of delays with several announced “Coming Soon” opening dates. While the luxury lounge at Nadi International Airport is currently operational, the hangar was anticipated to open by year’s end. The new hangar is intended to provide a seamless transfer experience for guests traveling to and from Kokomo Private Island.
Guests arriving on international flights will initially be welcomed at the information desk in the arrivals hall and then escorted to the luxury lounge, where they will have access to refreshments, entertainment, family play areas, and shower facilities after lengthy flights. Upon departure, guests can again enjoy the lounge amenities while waiting for their connecting flights.
The hangar’s opening has been delayed primarily due to the need to replace a section of the apron that had been constructed with the wrong type of concrete, as confirmed by reliable sources.
In 2019, COMO Laucala Island announced its plans for the $45 million luxury lounge and hangar facility. In 2022, construction was halted but was subsequently resumed in 2023.
Laucala Island is known as a destination for affluent visitors, with Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica noting that high-profile individuals often visit the island. Last year, he attributed the delays in hangar development to a “bottleneck” in investment.
The private island resort features an airstrip for private aircraft and boasts 25 villas that redefine luxury accommodations. The tourism property operates three aircraft that have been in service for several years.
