Wests Tigers standout five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight players selected to represent Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship, as announced by head coach Joe Rabele.
Rabele confirmed during the weekend that the team scouted players in Australia, resulting in the selection of eight athletes for the squad. Lutu, who has made a name for herself with the Wests Tigers, is among those chosen.
Originally from Suva, Lutu is a product of the Campbelltown Juniors and has quickly risen through the ranks of the Wests Tigers in recent years. Known for her strong running game, Lutu had a breakout season in 2022, contributing to New South Wales’ success in the Under-19s State of Origin and clinching the title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.
As the team prepares for their match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, Rabele emphasized the importance of finding the best player combinations.
The coach, who previously guided the Bati to the semi-finals in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, noted that they have been observing local women’s competitions. While a preliminary squad of 35 players has been identified, the final selections will require approval from the National Rugby League regarding player eligibility.
Rabele expressed optimism about the upcoming qualifier and highlighted the need for improvement in the local competition. He stated that reaching the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup is a critical goal, and the team is preparing thoroughly for the qualifiers.
He revealed that the squad would comprise 50 percent local-based players and included several secondary school athletes from the Lami Steelers in his consideration for the qualifier.
Looking back, Rabele noted that the absence of Fiji Bulikula from last year’s World Cup was a setback. However, he views this year as an opportunity to better identify talent and create a well-rounded team for the championship.
