Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight NRLW players selected to represent the Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. This announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.
Rabele stated, “We ventured to Australia to scout players and managed to select eight athletes for our team.” He emphasized Lutu’s significance, saying, “Playing for the Wests Tigers, we have the talented halfback Losana Lutu included in our lineup.”
Lutu, who hails from Suva, has quickly moved up the ranks within the Wests Tigers organization after starting as a junior in Campbelltown. She has showcased her skills as a talented five-eighth with a powerful running game, having a breakout season in 2022. Lutu contributed to New South Wales’ victory in the Under-19s State of Origin and later clinched her first title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is currently signed with the club until the conclusion of the 2026 season.
Rabele mentioned that the coaching staff aims to form the best possible team for their upcoming match against the Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. “We’ve been observing the women’s local competitions,” Rabele, who previously coached the Bati to the 2008 RLWC semi-finals, commented.
He added that there are several players under consideration for the 35-member squad, but they must first seek approval from the NRL regarding player eligibility. Rabele noted that there is room for enhancement, particularly regarding the local competition’s level.
“The qualifier is crucial for us,” Rabele acknowledged. He understands the importance of this stage as they aim to qualify for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. “We have a solid team, and we’re awaiting clearance from the NRL. I’ve also included various secondary school players from the Lami Steelers in the qualifying squad,” he said, emphasizing that half of the squad will feature locally-based players.
Reflecting on last year, Rabele expressed disappointment that the Fiji Bulikula did not participate in the World Cup. However, he feels positive about this year’s opportunity to evaluate and identify players, believing that the upcoming team will be a strong and diverse mix of talent.
