Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is set to represent Fiji Bulikula as part of the eight players selected for the National Rugby League Women’s (NRLW) Pacific Bowl Championship. This announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.
“We traveled to Australia to scout for talent and identified eight players, including the standout halfback Losana Lutu,” Rabele stated.
Born in Suva, Lutu has quickly risen through the ranks after starting her journey with Campbelltown Juniors. The talented five-eighth showcased her skills in 2022, playing a crucial role in New South Wales’ success in the Under-19s State of Origin and achieving her first title with Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.
Rabele emphasized the importance of forming the best team for their upcoming match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup.
“We’ve been monitoring the women’s local competition,” Rabele, who previously led the Fiji Bati to the semifinals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, noted. He indicated that while he is preparing a squad of 35 players, they will need to secure approval from the NRL regarding player eligibility.
Rabele acknowledged the potential for growth within the local competition. “The qualifier is a key match for us,” he said, aware of the challenge to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
“Our side is promising, and we’re awaiting clearance from the NRL. I’ve also included several secondary school players from Lami Steelers in the qualifying squad,” he added, indicating that half of the squad will be comprised of local talent.
He reflected on the previous year’s setback of not participating in the World Cup, stating, “This year allows us to better identify our players. The team we will announce will feature a blend of talents.”
