Former Australian footballer Luke Wilkshire and his wife Kristina have arrived in Fiji ahead of the Extra Supermarket Fiji FA Awards Night, which is set to take place this Sunday at the Crowne Plaza in Nadi.
Reflecting on his return to Fiji after many years, Wilkshire expressed his excitement. “It feels great to be back. The last time I was here, I was just a little kid, around seven or eight years old. My wife is visiting for the first time, and we’re both looking forward to the coming days and the awards night,” he stated.
Wilkshire, who has 80 caps for the Socceroos, noted the significant advancement of football in Fiji and the Oceania region. He emphasized the contributions of players like Leroy Jennings, who he coached and is now part of Fiji’s national team. “It’s great to see the passion for football here. Hopefully, in the coming years, younger generations will continue to be inspired to play and develop their skills,” he said.
Encouraging young Fijians to chase their football aspirations, Wilkshire remarked, “Fall in love with the game and dream big. Football opens doors to endless possibilities. As a kid, I fell in love with the round ball, and it took me all over the world.”
He also expressed his gratitude for being invited to the event, stating, “I’m looking forward to the awards night and celebrating the sport with everyone here. It’s a privilege to see how football is growing in Fiji and to be part of this journey.”
The Fiji FA Awards Night aims to celebrate outstanding players, officials, and teams for their contributions to Fijian football throughout the year.
This gathering not only highlights the achievements in football but also fosters a sense of community and inspiration among upcoming talents in Fiji. Wilkshire’s enthusiastic message on pursuing dreams through football encourages young athletes to strive for excellence.
