Former Australian football star Luke Wilkshire and his wife Kristina have arrived in Fiji for the Extra Supermarket Fiji FA Awards Night, scheduled for this Sunday at Crowne Plaza in Nadi. Wilkshire, who is returning to Fiji after many years, expressed his enthusiasm about the trip.
“It feels great to be back. The last time I was here, I was just a little kid, around seven or eight years old. My wife is visiting for the first time, and we’re both eager for the awards night and our time here,” he remarked.
Having played 80 matches for the Socceroos, Wilkshire noted the significant development of football in Fiji and the Oceania region. He praised the growth of the sport and highlighted the efforts of individuals like Leroy Jennings, one of his protégés who has made it to Fiji’s national team.
“The passion for football here is inspiring. I hope that in the coming years, younger generations will be encouraged to play and enhance their skills,” he stated.
Wilkshire also shared a message for young aspiring footballers in Fiji: “Fall in love with the game and dream big. Football opens doors to endless possibilities. As a kid, I fell in love with the round ball, and it took me all over the world.”
He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the awards event, looking forward to celebrating the achievements in Fijian football. “It’s a privilege to witness the growth of the sport in Fiji and to be part of this exciting journey,” he said.
The Fiji FA Awards Night aims to recognize exceptional players, officials, and teams for their contributions to football in Fiji over the past year.
This event not only celebrates football but also ignites hope and inspiration among the youth, encouraging them to pursue their sporting dreams. It’s a beautiful moment for both Wilkshire and the local football community, reflecting a collective aspiration for the growth of the sport in the region.
