The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is calling on all motorists to maintain heightened vigilance while driving, as well as reminding parents and guardians to prioritize the safety of their children on the roads. This urgent appeal follows the tragic incident involving the death of a 3-year-old boy from Kulukulu, Sigatoka, who was reportedly struck by a vehicle driven by a 38-year-old woman as he was crossing the road with his grandmother in Sigatoka Town.

LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this incident, emphasizing the profound tragedy that accompanies the loss of any life on the roads, particularly that of a child. He noted that children are some of the most vulnerable road users, and their safety is heavily reliant on the active supervision of adults.

Rokosawa underscored the critical role that drivers play in road safety, urging them to remain alert, especially in areas frequented by children, such as near schools, playgrounds, and residential neighborhoods. He highlighted the importance of slowing down in pedestrian-heavy areas and yielding to pedestrians at all times, as even a brief lapse in attention can lead to devastating outcomes.

The CEO further pointed out that while drivers must be cautious, pedestrians, particularly children, also bear responsibility for their own safety. He urged parents and guardians to closely supervise children near roadways, encouraging them to hold their hands when crossing streets and to teach them proper traffic rules and safety precautions from an early age.

In addition to promoting responsible driving behavior, Rokosawa reminded drivers of the necessity to respect traffic signage, adhere to speed limits, and avoid distractions, particularly mobile phones. These measures are essential not only for the safety of children but for all road users.

The LTA continues its collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and other stakeholders to enhance road safety initiatives, fostering public awareness and enforcing regulations aimed at reducing road-related casualties and fatalities. Through these efforts, there is hope for a safer environment for all road participants and a commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of the community.
