The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has made a significant decision to revoke the driving licenses of eight individuals linked to fatal traffic incidents. Among those affected is a 21-year-old truck driver involved in a recent tragic accident on Princes Road in Tacirua that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student.

LTA’s CEO, Irimaia Rokosawa, confirmed that these individuals are facing showcause proceedings as outlined in Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. The young truck driver, who was behind the wheel with an expired Learner’s Permit, has been issued a five-year license suspension due to the grave nature of the event.

Rokosawa stressed the importance of this action as a strong message to all drivers regarding the severe repercussions of reckless driving. He emphasized that adherence to licensing conditions and road safety regulations is crucial for the well-being of all road users. “The authority has zero tolerance for reckless driving,” he noted, reaffirming the commitment to take decisive action against those who jeopardize safety on the roads.

The tragic incident in Tacirua underscores the pressing issue of reckless driving. Rokosawa pointed out that driving safely is not only a matter of individual responsibility but a societal duty as well. He warned that a single moment of carelessness can lead to irreversible damage.

In addition, LTA is working in partnership with the Fiji Police Force to address the problem of repeat traffic offenders and to revise the existing traffic laws. Under the Crimes Act 2009, reckless driving can lead to serious legal consequences, including imprisonment.

Rokosawa reiterated that LTA will continue proceedings against those who blatantly ignore road safety, particularly those operating vehicles without valid licenses. The cancellation of the truck driver’s license, along with the others, is part of an ongoing effort to reduce reckless driving, which has been linked to an increase in accidents caused by speeding, distraction, and negligence. This move reflects a proactive approach to address the concerning rise in road fatalities, highlighting the authority’s commitment to ensuring safer roads for everyone.

The authorities’ actions not only serve to deter reckless behavior among drivers but also signify a collective responsibility between individuals and institutions to foster safer driving practices. Through collaboration and strict enforcement, LTA aims to make a positive impact in reducing traffic-related tragedies and ensuring safer journey experiences for all citizens.
