The Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Fiji has taken decisive action by revoking the driver licenses of eight individuals linked to serious traffic incidents, including a tragic accident last week in Tacirua that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student.

According to LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa, these individuals faced showcause proceedings as per Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000, leading to the cancellation of their licenses. The 21-year-old truck driver involved in the Tacirua accident was found to be driving with an expired Learner’s Permit and will be disqualified from driving for five years due to the severity of the incident.

Rokosawa emphasized that this situation serves as a crucial reminder to all drivers—whether they hold a Learner’s Permit, Provisional, or Full License—that adherence to driving regulations is vital for ensuring safety on the roads. The LTA has a firm stance on reckless driving and maintains a “zero tolerance” policy, with the cancellation of licenses intended to send a strong message regarding the dangers posed by negligent driving behaviors.

The LTA is also collaborating with the Fiji Police Force to explore measures that would address repeated traffic offenses, with discussions underway to introduce criminal penalties for habitual violators. Under the current legal framework, drivers who operate vehicles recklessly could face imprisonment for up to two years.

Safety on the roads is portrayed as not just a personal responsibility but a societal duty. Rokosawa reiterated the need for drivers to reflect on their habits and recognize that reckless behaviors, such as speeding and distracted driving, contribute significantly to accidents. He called for a cultural shift in attitudes toward road safety, particularly as the festive season approaches.

On a positive note, the LTA’s proactive measures aim to reduce the number of reckless drivers, ensuring that safety becomes a shared commitment among all road users in Fiji. The current statistics show a slight improvement, with 61 fatalities reported this year compared to 76 during the same period last year, highlighting the potential for progress in road safety efforts.

In summary, the LTA is emphasizing the importance of safe driving and the consequences of negligence, while also making strides in reducing traffic-related accidents in Fiji.
