The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken a firm stance against reckless driving by cancelling 70 driver licenses and suspending 48 others between January 2024 and April 2025. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to enhance road safety and reduce traffic violations. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that non-compliance with road safety measures would not be tolerated, as reckless driving poses significant risks to public safety.

In his statement, Rokosawa highlighted the seriousness of the issue, asserting that “drivers must understand the serious consequences of reckless behaviour on our roads.” The cancellation of licenses follows a rigorous disciplinary process that includes counselling sessions, with the LTA having counselled 164 drivers and issued numerous warnings in 2024 alone. By mid-April 2025, the authority had already counselled an additional 33 drivers and issued over a thousand first warnings.

Rokosawa reiterated the LTA’s commitment to educate drivers about their responsibilities and promote safe driving practices. He acknowledged that speeding remains a leading cause of road fatalities. As of May 6, statistics indicate that the national road death toll stood at 18, a slight decrease from 19 during the same period the previous year, reflecting a hopeful trend towards safer roads.

The LTA’s actions are complemented by collaborations with the Fiji Police Force to address dangerous driving through joint operations and community outreach activities. This proactive approach aims to promote accountability and responsibility among drivers, ultimately enhancing the safety of every road user.

Considering the significant steps taken by the LTA, there is optimism for improved road safety in the future, as these initiatives highlight the importance of individual responsibility in maintaining safe driving habits. With continued enforcement and education, there is hope that the trend of reducing road accidents will persist, fostering a culture of care and attentiveness on the roads.
