The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has taken decisive action by revoking the driver licenses of eight individuals linked to fatal accidents. One significant case involves a 21-year-old truck driver, whose vehicle was involved in a tragic incident last week on Princes Road in Tacirua that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa confirmed that these eight individuals faced showcause proceedings and had their licenses cancelled under Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. The cancellation includes the truck driver, whose expired Learner’s Permit at the time of the accident contributed to the severity of the situation and has led to a five-year license suspension.

Rokosawa emphasized the importance of adhering to driving regulations, stating that negligence behind the wheel endangers all road users, and the authority has a zero-tolerance policy toward reckless driving. This move serves as a firm message that the LTA will take strong action against individuals who put others at risk.

In collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, the LTA is working to introduce laws aimed at criminalizing repeated traffic offenses and revising existing regulations. Under the Crimes Act 2009, driving in a reckless manner is a summary offense, punishable by up to two years in prison.

The issue of reckless driving is pressing, as statistics show a troubling trend in recent accidents caused by speeding, lack of attention, and other negligent behaviors. Rokosawa reiterated the necessity for drivers to reflect on safe driving habits, calling for a collective effort to prioritize road safety, especially during the festive season.

The current road safety campaign urges all drivers to understand that their actions on the road matter significantly. With the death toll for the year standing at 61, an improvement compared to 76 fatalities during the same period last year, there is hope that ongoing efforts and a change in mindset toward road safety can further reduce accidents and protect lives.

In conclusion, the LTA’s proactive stance can be seen as a crucial step towards fostering a culture of safety on the roads, helping to prevent tragedies, and encouraging a collective responsibility. By raising awareness and enforcing stricter regulations, there is a genuine opportunity to enhance road safety and ensure every person’s journey is a safe one.
