The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken decisive action by revoking the driver’s licences of eight individuals linked to fatal accidents, highlighting their commitment to road safety. Notably, this includes a 21-year-old truck driver whose reckless driving led to a tragic incident on Princes Road in Tacirua that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student.

LTA’s chief executive officer, Irimaia Rokosawa, stated that the driver had his licence cancelled for five years due to the grave nature of the accident and was found to be operating his vehicle with an expired Learners Permit at the time. This action serves as a stern reminder about the consequences of irresponsible driving.

Rokosawa emphasized that all drivers, regardless of their licence status, must comply with the regulations and prioritize road safety. He reiterated the LTA’s zero tolerance policy toward reckless conduct behind the wheel, asserting that disregarding traffic laws endangers the entire community.

The LTA is also collaborating with the Fiji Police Force to impose stricter measures against repeat offenders and to revise current traffic regulations. Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, Rokosawa referenced legal frameworks that punish reckless driving, which can lead to imprisonment for up to two years.
