The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is set to revamp its enforcement strategy to better manage the rising number of vehicles on the roads amidst ongoing staff shortages. This overhaul will involve the integration of automation in monitoring practices to enhance driver compliance.
Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa reported that there has been commendable progress in reducing traffic fatalities, with February recording zero deaths and a 16% drop in fatalities from 2023 to 2024. However, Rokosawa emphasized the need for further action given that 66 lives were lost last year. This tragic figure underscores the urgency of enhancing enforcement measures.
The Chief Executive highlighted the disparity between staffing levels and the surge in vehicle registrations, noting that the ratio of enforcement officers to vehicles has deteriorated from one officer per 1,500 vehicles in 2022 to one per 1,600 now. This growing divide reflects the faster increase in vehicle numbers compared to available human resources.
To combat these challenges, Rokosawa advocates for increased digitization. He pointed out that many processes are still manual and believes that full automation could significantly uplift road safety. Plans are already underway to deploy more automated systems such as number plate recognition cameras.
Assistant Minister for Transport Naisa Tuinaceva has voiced support for these innovative changes, highlighting the importance of technological tools like speed cameras in strengthening the LTA’s enforcement framework. He acknowledged that while machines can enhance efficiency, human oversight is crucial for evaluating vehicle standards and safety.
Looking to the future, Tuinaceva reassured that the Ministry would carefully review budget proposals to ensure that the LTA has the resources necessary to fulfill its mission effectively. The proactive approach taken by the Ministry and the LTA reflects a positive commitment to enhancing road safety through technology.
