The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is advocating for the reinstatement of comprehensive car insurance as a strategy to alleviate traffic congestion and expedite the resolution of accidents on the roads. In statements made by LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa, it was revealed that a large number of drivers currently only possess third-party insurance coverage. This limitation often necessitates police involvement even in minor collisions, creating unnecessary delays, particularly during peak traffic hours.

Rokosawa pointed out that if all drivers were required to have comprehensive coverage, many minor accidents could be addressed on the spot without diverting law enforcement resources. He stressed, “Comprehensive insurance is not compulsory. Most of the time, only one party is covered by comprehensive insurance while the other is not. That’s why police need to be involved.” This, he argues, contributes significantly to traffic build-up during busy periods, as minor incidents that could be resolved quickly prolong congestion.

Public consultations involving insurers and other key stakeholders are planned as part of this initiative. The overarching goal is to relieve pressure on police resources while improving traffic flow for all road users.

This proposal aligns with the LTA’s ongoing efforts to promote a culture of responsibility on the roads, which has been a focal point for Rokosawa, especially in light of recent tragic accidents emphasizing reckless driving behaviors. Previous calls for collective responsibility in ensuring road safety align with this new initiative, reinforcing the necessity for comprehensive measures to guarantee safer driving conditions for everyone.

By advocating for comprehensive insurance, the LTA seeks not only to manage traffic more effectively but also to strengthen accountability among drivers, ultimately paving the way for fewer accidents and a smoother driving experience across Fiji’s roadways. With the implementation of such measures, there is hope for a future where travel is both safer and more efficient for all.
