The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is set to introduce three portable speed cameras in Vanua Levu, aimed at addressing the critical issue of speeding on roads. Faiyum Ali, the LTA’s chief operating officer, highlighted that speeding is a major contributor to road accidents in Fiji, underlining the necessity of this new initiative.
The LTA has a history of implementing safety measures, having previously installed fixed speed and red-light cameras in key areas such as Suva and the Western Division. This new deployment in the Northern Division signifies an important advancement in their efforts to combat speeding and enhance road safety.
The recent agreement with the LTA includes a total of twelve portable speed cameras, with a portion allocated specifically for Vanua Levu. These cameras will operate around the clock at various checkpoints, offering an automated and transparent approach to monitoring traffic violations. This system assures accurate documentation of offenses and will generate traffic infringement notices, even for law enforcement personnel who may violate speed limits.
The LTA expresses optimism that this initiative will lead to greater compliance among drivers. In addition to this, the Fiji Roads Authority is evaluating the installation of road humps in specific locations to further promote safe driving habits.
This strategic move reflects a committed response to Fiji’s traffic safety challenges, where speeding significantly contributes to road fatalities. The deployment of innovative technology and proactive enforcement measures promises hope for enhanced road safety and a decrease in accidents, fostering a safer driving environment across the nation.
