The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has confirmed that a checkpoint on Naseakula Road, where a tragic incident involving a police officer and a cane truck occurred, was correctly established. CEO Irimaia Rokosawa responded to allegations that the checkpoint was inadequately equipped, stating that there is no evidence to support claims regarding any lack of warning signs or the use of incorrect cones.
Following the collision, technical assessments revealed that the truck involved did not have any mechanical issues. The crash was attributed to the driver’s alleged failure to stop when directed by an authorized officer, a decision that proved particularly dangerous given the wet conditions and the vehicle’s load of sugarcane. Rokosawa emphasized the importance of responsible driving, highlighting that the incident indicates negligence and a lack of regard for road safety.
Moreover, Rokosawa noted the LTA’s ongoing collaboration with police to address various high-risk behaviors on the roads, extending beyond just vehicle defects. The statistics are concerning, with road fatalities rising to 72 by November 28, compared to 56 during the same timeframe last year. This increase underscores the pressing need for collective efforts to enhance road safety.
He urged the community to rely on verified information while investigations are underway. Acknowledging the rapid spread of misinformation during distressing events, Rokosawa called for public trust in the investigative process as authorities work diligently to uncover the facts.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of road safety and responsible driving practices.
