The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging bus operators and drivers to prioritize safety following a concerning incident in Ba where a bus carrying children became stranded in swiftly moving floodwaters. Fortunately, all passengers were evacuated unharmed. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that any operator or driver jeopardizing public safety will face stringent enforcement measures.
Rokosawa referenced a separate incident in which a bus driver was issued a Traffic Infringement Notice after a video surfaced on social media showing students precariously riding on the edge of open windows. He underscored the inherent dangers associated with overcrowding, reckless driving, and unsafe behaviors among students.
“No child should be subjected to unsafe travel conditions due to overloading,” Rokosawa stated, highlighting the responsibility of drivers to ensure that all students are seated securely before departure. He also noted the necessity for immediate action in response to any unsafe behavior.
In addition, Rokosawa stressed the critical need for proper vehicle maintenance and adherence to licensing regulations. He pointed out that all school buses are required to undergo regular inspections to certify their roadworthiness, ensuring that essential components such as brakes, tires, lights, mirrors, and emergency exits are thoroughly checked.
As public safety remains a top priority, the LTA’s commitment to enforcing these measures aims to create a safer environment for all students using public transportation.
