The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has revoked the driving licences of eight individuals linked to fatal accidents, marking a significant step towards enhancing road safety. Among those affected is a 21-year-old truck driver whose reckless actions resulted in a tragic incident along Princes Road in Tacirua, leading to the death of a 13-year-old student.

LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa stated that each of these individuals participated in showcause hearings under Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. Due to the severity of the incident, the young truck driver, who was operating the vehicle with an expired learner’s permit at the time, has had his licence cancelled for five years.

Rokosawa emphasized that this decision serves as a poignant reminder to all drivers about the serious repercussions of reckless driving. He noted, “This serves as a lesson for all licence holders—Learners, Provisional, or Full Licence holders. You must adhere to your licence conditions. Disregarding road safety not only jeopardizes your life but also the lives of all road users.”

Further stressing the importance of responsible driving, he declared that the authority has zero tolerance for such behavior and will act promptly to protect lives on the road. The unfortunate event in Tacirua has highlighted the pressing issue of reckless driving, and Rokosawa reminded the public that safe driving is a community responsibility, warning that even a brief moment of negligence can lead to permanent consequences.

In a proactive move, LTA is partnering with the Fiji Police Force to address repeat traffic offenders and revise current traffic regulations. Under the Crimes Act 2009, driving recklessly can lead to imprisonment for up to two years, highlighting the serious legal implications of such actions.

The cancellation of these licences is emblematic of a larger initiative to combat reckless driving—a behavior linked to an alarming rise in accidents due to speeding, inattention, and negligence. Recent statistics indicate an upward trend in road fatalities, prompting the authority to take immediate action.

In conclusion, the LTA’s decisive measures illustrate a commitment to road safety and the protection of public lives. Through collaboration and rigorous enforcement, there is hope that these actions will lead to a decrease in reckless driving incidents, fostering a safer environment for all road users.
