The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has revoked the driver’s licenses of eight individuals linked to fatal accidents, underscoring its commitment to road safety. This includes the license of a 21-year-old truck driver responsible for a tragic incident on Princes Road in Tacirua last week, which resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student.

LTA’s CEO, Irimaia Rokosawa, revealed that these individuals were summoned for showcause proceedings in accordance with Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. In the case of the young truck driver, who was behind the wheel with an expired Learner’s Permit at the time of the accident, his license has been revoked for five years due to the severity of the situation.

Mr. Rokosawa issued a stern warning that these actions send a clear message to all drivers about the serious ramifications of reckless driving. He emphasized the importance of adhering to license conditions and road safety rules, which are crucial in protecting the lives of all road users. “The authority has zero tolerance for reckless driving,” he declared, affirming that quick actions will be taken against those who endanger others on the roads.

The fatal crash in Tacirua has brought to light the rising concerns over reckless driving, and Mr. Rokosawa highlighted that safe driving is not only a personal duty but also a social responsibility. He cautioned that even a moment of negligence can result in devastating consequences.

To further combat this issue, the LTA is working with the Fiji Police Force to criminalize repeat traffic offenders and to reassess current traffic regulations. Mr. Rokosawa pointed out that driving recklessly can lead to serious legal repercussions, with offenders facing up to two years in prison under Section 268 (a) of the Crimes Act 2009.

The cancellation of the truck driver’s and other licenses is part of a larger initiative to tackle reckless driving, particularly as recent statistics reveal an alarming trend in road fatalities. In light of this, the authority’s swift actions reflect a commitment to improving road safety and ensuring the well-being of all road users.

This proactive stance by the LTA reassures the community that measures are being taken to enhance road safety and reduce accidents. By emphasizing collaboration with law enforcement and reinforcing safe driving norms, there is hope for a noticeable improvement in driver behavior and road safety in the future.
