The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced plans to enhance enforcement against road safety violations during the festive season in order to combat reckless driving. This initiative aims to address a concerning increase in road accidents, particularly those involving Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers.
In the wake of a recent incident in Navuniasi, Naitasiri, where a driver lost control of a vehicle resulting in injuries to 13 students, LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the urgent need for stricter adherence to traffic regulations. The tragic event serves as a reminder of the potential dangers on the road, especially during adverse weather conditions.
Rokosawa insists that all drivers, especially those operating PSVs, must prioritize safety by strictly observing traffic laws. He highlighted the importance of adhering to speed limits, warning that speeding remains one of the leading causes of accidents. Moreover, drivers are urged to avoid distractions such as mobile phone use while operating a vehicle, as these can elevate the risk of accidents.
