Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has instructed the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to prioritize its enforcement efforts on critical issues such as drunk driving and speeding, rather than targeting bus passengers for minor infractions. This directive follows public backlash triggered by a viral video that showed an LTA officer ticketing a 60-year-old woman $150 for not having her bus card.

LTA’s chief executive officer, Irimaia Rokosawa, responded to the public’s concerns and acknowledged the criticisms regarding recent enforcement practices. He emphasized that the LTA is actively collaborating with its service provider and stakeholders to enhance the e-ticketing system, which has been at the center of various complaints.

Mr. Rokosawa highlighted the authority’s immediate goal of improving the accessibility of top-up and recharge options for the e-ticketing system in both rural and urban areas. He assured the public that discussions are underway with vendors to expand top-up options and improve technical support, thus aiming to minimize disruptions in service.

Furthermore, the LTA is undertaking a thorough review of the feedback received from the community to elevate the system’s functionality. This review includes an assessment of compliance with the Electronic Fare Ticketing (Omnibus) Regulations 2017, focusing on fare payments and bus card inspections.

The authority has expressed its commitment to addressing public grievances seriously, ensuring that the e-ticketing experience is improved while maintaining regulatory standards. Their goal is to make public transport services accessible, transparent, and user-friendly for all Fijians.

In summary, the LTA is taking significant steps to rectify its approach and enhance the e-ticketing experience for passengers, which ultimately benefits public transportation services in Fiji. This shift in focus demonstrates a responsive governance model that values public input and aims for a safer travel environment.
