The Online Safety Commission in Fiji has joined forces with the Miss Fiji 2025 Pageant to introduce a new awareness song titled “Loving Hands.” This initiative, aimed at combating the increasingly toxic culture prevalent on social media, was highlighted during the song’s launch event, where Online Safety Commissioner Filipe Batiwale expressed concern over the negative impacts that such online behaviors are having on Fijian culture and community values, particularly in light of the upcoming pageant.
Mr. Batiwale emphasized the importance of being mindful before posting or sharing content online, stating, “It’s about promoting the idea of thinking before you click.” The song, performed by artists Sam Kurukitoga and Grace Vuata, will be available on various social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, managed by the Online Safety Commission, as well as the Fiji Government’s channels.
The collaboration with the Miss Fiji Pageant represents a strategic move to broaden the Commission’s outreach, targeting audiences in communities that might otherwise be overlooked. Contestants from the pageant will play a pivotal role in delivering the message of online safety and resilience to their respective communities, fostering a culture of careful digital engagement.
In response to the growing challenges of online safety, the Commission will also provide training on online resilience and the use of digital tools, aiming to create a secure online environment for both contestants and their followers. Mr. Batiwale reminded attendees that no one is immune to negative experiences online, and this partnership serves as a platform to educate the public about existing laws designed to protect individuals from online harm.
The artists involved in “Loving Hands” expressed their hope that the song will resonate with listeners, promoting positivity, leniency, and kindness while encouraging Fijians to counteract hatred and negativity encountered in the digital space.
This proactive initiative reflects ongoing efforts by the Online Safety Commission to address issues highlighted in previous reports regarding toxic content and fraudulent activities on social media platforms like Facebook. As concerns mount over harmful online trends, particularly those impacting youth, the Commission is dedicated to raising awareness and fostering a more supportive online community.
Through partnerships, training, and awareness campaigns like “Loving Hands,” there is optimism for a shift towards a safer online environment in Fiji, where responsible digital citizenship is fostered, ultimately benefitting the youth and community at large. By empowering individuals with knowledge and tools, Fiji can continue to cultivate a respectful and constructive digital landscape.
