Loss of a Leader: Ratu Inoke Takiveikata Passes Away

Naitasiri’s paramount chief, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, has passed away following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. The respected leader died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital after a brief hospitalization. His loss marks a significant moment for the community, as Ratu Inoke was not only a traditional leader but also an influential political figure, having served as a member of the Great Council of Chiefs and advocating tirelessly for the welfare of his people.

Ratu Inoke held the title of Turaga na Qaranivalu since 1997 and previously served as Minister for Regional Development and Multi-Ethnic Affairs in the interim cabinet during 2000-2001. He led a notable traditional apology to the Prime Minister on behalf of Aseri Radrodro in January 2024, showcasing his commitment to maintaining traditional protocols, something he upheld until his passing.

His legacy includes participation in three meetings of the Great Council of Chiefs since 2022, where he played a role in addressing significant issues affecting the i-Taukei people. This week, Social Democratic Liberal Party Leader Aseri Radrodro mentioned that Fijians would need to await an official announcement from traditional heralds regarding funeral details to ensure that all customary practices are respected.

Ratu Inoke’s political career experienced challenges, including a conviction related to the 2000 coup attempt, but he received a presidential pardon in December 2023, allowing him to contribute to his community even more freely.

The province is poised to observe traditional rites before revealing further arrangements about the funeral, underscoring the importance of customary practices in honoring leaders like Ratu Inoke. His passing comes in a time of collective mourning for Fijians, further highlighting the pressing need for strong community leadership to navigate future challenges. Many hope that his contributions will inspire future generations to continue working towards unity and resilience in the community.
