The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) has honored the memory of the late Foreign Secretary Lorin Robert, recognizing him as a pivotal figure in Pacific fisheries diplomacy and a staunch advocate for regional cooperation. The Commission expressed its sorrow at his passing and acknowledged his lifelong dedication to public service, calling his death “a tremendous loss for the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and the Pacific region.”

With over four decades in diplomacy, Secretary Robert significantly influenced FSM’s foreign policy, amplifying its voice on international platforms. He was instrumental in establishing and nurturing the WCPFC, securing Pohnpei as the host for the commission’s Secretariat when it began operations in 2005. This achievement is seen as a testament to his commitment to fostering regional collaboration and affirming FSM’s leadership in the governance of Pacific fisheries.

The WCPFC noted Secretary Robert’s unwavering dedication to enhancing conservation and management measures, often bringing members together during challenging negotiations. His approach was characterized by a “quiet, measured style” that fostered trust and bridged divides among stakeholders.

Lauded as “a dedicated statesman, mentor, and partner,” Secretary Robert ensured that the perspectives of FSM were effectively communicated within WCPFC deliberations. The Commission extends its deepest condolences to his family and the government and people of the FSM, as it joins the nation in mourning a leader whose legacy will undoubtedly continue to influence Pacific fisheries governance for years to come.

This heartfelt tribute underscores the significant impact Secretary Robert had on both regional cooperation and sustainable fisheries management in the Pacific, leaving a lasting imprint on the future of fisheries governance.
